The well established standard procedure of autologous tissue transplantation stabilizes the knee and allows sport activities after 9-12 months. However, harvest of autologous tissue such as patellar tendon or semitendinosus (the most frequently used autograft) weakens other body areas and long term data show an increased rate of arthroses (up to 50% after 10 years) associated with ACL reconstructions. Based on numerous preclinical data and data from a 12-month sheep study the scale-up as well as regulatory approval process of a novel textile engineered silk implant as ACL graft have been initiated. It is planned to enter a clinical trial and strive for regulatory approval as a medical class 3 implant. The sheep data (1) have revealed an approximately 50% degradation of the purified medical silk, which acts as scaffold for the regrowth of a new endogenous ligament. The formation of oriented collagenous tissue fibers including vascularization proves a ligament tissue regeneration for the first time. Scale-up and implementation of a commercial process require a defined set of specifications of commercial silkworm (Bombyx mori) silk, a biological raw material sourced from the textile industry as well as adequate analytical methods to characterize the depletion of sericin in the course of the production process. Based on first full scale samples, the defined biocompatibility program has to be executed, in the EU following the ISO requirements of the notified bodies, in the USA determined by the FDA. Upon submission of the full technical documentation as well as the biocompati-bility data, approval of a clinical trial can be achieved in order to demonstrate the clinical efficacy of the silk based ACL graft compared to the gold standard method in two different randomized groups. As primary endpoint the knee stability will be tested by an apparatus supported Lachmann test. In this study, besides the clinical benefit the patient safety is an important goal. The results of this study will be used for achievement of regulatory approval. References: 1) Teuschl A, Heimel P, Nürnberger S, van Griensven M, Redl H, Nau T. Am. J. Although widely used, their impact on laboratory performance has not been investigated. Methods We retrospectively analysed the results of 167 laboratories in 59 distributions of the Austrian red cell immunohaematology external quality assessment (EQA) scheme in the years 1999-2017. The performance for each parameter and trends of individual participants were compared with respect to certification or accreditation status of participants' quality systems and to laboratory type. Results Considering more than 52,000 EQA results, the absence or presence of a laboratory quality management system showed different error rates. Laboratories with ISO 9001 or ISO 15189 certification/accreditation had 0.7% incorrect results, while this rate was doubled without such quality systems (1.4%, p=0.0002). Statistically significant error reductions were seen upon ISO 9001/ISO 15189 implementation (1.3% before vs. 0.7% after; p=0.0468). Transfusion services had fewer errors (0.9%) compared to hospital and independent laboratories (both 1.2%). Conclusions Implementation and maintenance of quality systems according to ISO 9001 or ISO 15189 as well as laboratory specialisation result in better analytical performance as can be seen in immunohaematology EQA results. The conclusion is that these results apply to other laboratory tests and perhaps to other areas of health care. This tendency can be observed in other domains as well and is accompanied by new digital technological developments. Blockchain technology is assigned disruptive potential when it comes to realize those decentralization ideas. This hype about Blockchain is mainly company-driven without a solid academic basis yet. The authors are currently involved in several research efforts for utilizing distributed energy resources like photovoltaic systems, batteries and electric cars for the setup of energy communities and marketplaces. The paper, therefore, presents detailed investigations of background and motivations for decentralization and the building of (local) energy communities and (peer-to-peer) marketplaces for sustainable utilization of renewable energies. An overview of recent related Blockchain-based works is presented, and the current state and feasibility for the realization of the envisioned decentralized solutions are discussed. In this way, the work aimed at contributing to a research-based decision foundation for upcoming Blockchain-based decentralization efforts. However, not only the teacher is given an evaluation tool, but also the students are able to evaluate their own progress, which is an important aspect in person-centered learning. This paper analyzes the impact of the game-based student response system Kahoot! on a person-centered flipped university course on the introduction to programming and gives recommendations on using quizzes in class. The course was evaluated via anonymous questionnaires before and after introducing regular gamified quizzes. The students’ feedback was extraordinarily positive; the results showed a significant improvement in the satisfaction with the course structure, course design, and perceived suitability of the course material. Hence, evidence found in this research suggests that game-based student response systems provide additional value to flipped classrooms in engineering education.
