In 2013 the city of Vienna started to create the Smart City Vienna framework strategy. The meta-goal for 2050 is written as “The best quality of life for all inhabitants of Vienna, while minimizing the consumption of resources. This will be realized through comprehensive innovation.” Our research at the University of Applied Sciences Technikum Wien deals with Smart City in a way to design and implement IT services that support the ideas of the Viennese strategy. In this paper we describe a Web-based tool that allows quantifying the quality of life for any specific address in Vienna. Therefore, we designed an algorithm that calculates an index based on specific categories for specific regions in Vienna. The determination of a concrete value is achieved by the use of Open Data. Here, we explain the algorithm, the used data catalogues, and we show the functionality within a prototype. Finally, we refer to further steps and developments.
Cyanobacteria, or blue-green algae, can be used as host to produce polyhydroxyalkanoates (PHA), which are promising bioplastic raw materials. The most important material thereof is polyhydroxybutyrate (PHB), which can replace the commodity polymer polypropylene (PP) in many applications, yielding a bio-based, biodegradable alternative solution. The advantage from using cyanobacteria to make PHB over the standard fermentation processes, with sugar or other organic (waste)
materials as feedstock, is that the sustainability is better (compare first-generation biofuels with the feed vs. fuel debate), with CO2 being the only carbon source and sunlight being the sole energy source. In this review article, the state of the art of cyanobacterial PHB production and its outlook is discussed. Thirty-seven percent of
dry cell weight of PHB could be obtained in 2018, which is getting close to up to 78% of PHB dry cell weight in heterotrophic microorganisms in fermentation reactors. A good potential for cyanobacterial PHB is seen throughout the literature.

Student response systems allow learners to actively contribute to the in-class learning process, while the teacher gets a picture of students’ understanding of the topics at hand. However, not only the teacher is given an evaluation tool, but also the students are able to evaluate their own progress, which is an important aspect in person-centered learning. This paper analyzes the impact of the game-based student response system Kahoot! on a person-centered flipped university course on the introduction to programming and gives recommendations on using quizzes in class. The course was evaluated via anonymous questionnaires before and after introducing regular gamified quizzes. The students’ feedback was extraordinarily positive; the results showed a significant improvement in the satisfaction with the course structure, course design, and perceived suitability of the course material. Hence, evidence found in this research suggests that game-based student response systems provide additional value to flipped classrooms in engineering education.
Background ISO 9001 and ISO 15189 have been established as continuative models for quality systems beyond national laws, mandatory standards and guidelines of expert associations regarding analytical and organisational performance of medical laboratories and transfusion services. Although widely used, their impact on laboratory performance has not been investigated. Methods We retrospectively analysed the results of 167 laboratories in 59 distributions of the Austrian red cell immunohaematology external quality assessment (EQA) scheme in the years 1999-2017. The performance for each parameter and trends of individual participants were compared with respect to certification or accreditation status of participants' quality systems and to laboratory type. Results Considering more than 52,000 EQA results, the absence or presence of a laboratory quality management system showed different error rates. Laboratories with ISO 9001 or ISO 15189 certification/accreditation had 0.7% incorrect results, while this rate was doubled without such quality systems (1.4%, p=0.0002). Statistically significant error reductions were seen upon ISO 9001/ISO 15189 implementation (1.3% before vs. 0.7% after; p=0.0468). Transfusion services had fewer errors (0.9%) compared to hospital and independent laboratories (both 1.2%). Conclusions Implementation and maintenance of quality systems according to ISO 9001 or ISO 15189 as well as laboratory specialisation result in better analytical performance as can be seen in immunohaematology EQA results. The conclusion is that these results apply to other laboratory tests and perhaps to other areas of health care.

Industrial and institutional floor cleaning today relies on mechanical action combined with chemicals, which is costly and a burden to the environment. There are floor cleaning pads on the market which claim increased service time due to diamond particles contained in the nonwoven materials. In this study, it was investigated whether cleaning results can also be obtained with hard-particle-coated pads using only water. SiC, diamond and Al 2 O 3 were used with particle sizes between 5 and 125 µm. 5 g/m² of hard particles were applied to the pads in epoxy resin. Weight loss from abrasive cleaning in 500 cycles and gloss increase were measured. Diamond and silicon carbide particles were found to work with pure water, without the need for chemical cleaning agents.
Cloud solutions in the business are nowadays becoming more
and more popular. Many companies decide to deploy their applications
in the cloud or migrate them from their non-cloud based solutions. It
allows them to focus on functionalities and turn over the work connected
with setting up and managing an infrastructure (with its issues such as
scalability or availability) to the cloud providers.
This paper provides an in-depth analysis of cloud solutions in aspects
of distributed business services. It is supported by a web application that
is responsible for testing the provided services to supports the analysis.
