Automatic classification of a full-thickness macular hole in optical coherence tomography images
(2023)
As IoT systems have increased the number of deployed embedded devices drastically and most of these devices are used in safety or security critical environments, the education of embedded software engineers is more important than ever. A critical part of their education is the development of their intuition for secure and safe software. In this paper 1 1 This research was funded by the city of Vienna (MA-23 call 21, project no. 9). we present an evaluation system used to generate fast and accurate feedback for student submission in, but not limited to, embedded software development courses. The system can be used as a first feedback loop to outline to the students where problems exist in their code and give them the opportunity to analyze and correct their errors. These extra steps ensure that the students can and will be notified early about their mistakes and can search for correct solutions, supporting the student's learning process. We present the implementation of the system and analyze its deployment in a microcontroller software development lecture. This analysis was done by means of surveys of the students and lecturers as well as a statistical analysis of the student submissions. The results show that the students made use of this extra features and even would prefer to have this feedback in other software development lectures as well.
The healthcare sector is growing in importance as people continue to age and pandemics complicate the boundary conditions of such systems. The number of innovative approaches to solve singular tasks and problems in this area is only slowly increasing. This is particularly evident when looking at medical technology planning, medical training and process simulation. In this paper a concept for versatile digital improvements to these problems by using state of the art development methods of Virtual Reality (VR) and Augmented Reality (AR) are presented. The programming and design of the software is done with the help of Unity Engine, which provides an open interface for docking with the developed framework for future work. The solutions were tested under domain specific environments and have shown good results and positive feedback.
Tapped inductor DC-to-DC converters are interesting circuits, the winding ratio of the two windings mounted on the same core change the voltage transformation ratio compared to the untapped inductor. The tapped inductor converters are especially useful, when high or low voltage transformation ratios have to be realized. The disadvantage of this concept is that the coupling between the two windings is not total and can be described by the stray or leakage inductance. This stray inductance leads to a high overvoltage at the active switch, and therefore also across other elements of the converter. After a short summery of the ideal tapped Boost converter, the design of an RCD snubber which limits the overvoltage is explained. To improve the efficiency of the converter two active snubber networks are treated, which feed the energy stored in the snubber capacitor into the input source or into the output circuit. Simulations are used to prove these considerations.
Electrolytic capacitors have the disadvantage of
pronounced aging. Non-electrolytic capacitors are therefore used
in applications where long-life is important. In this paper we
present a driving stage for LEDs without any capacitive
elements. The basic topology is a Buck converter with one coil,
one active, and one passive switch. Instead of the output
capacitor, series connections of one or more LEDs and an active
switch are connected. An additional diode is connected between
the output and the input to achieve a current path, when all LED-
paths are off. A nonlinear hysteresis controller is used to achieve
a robust control. A system with three switchable LED-strings is
analyzed. Design hints are given and the function is proved with
the help of LTSpice simulations. The system can be used for
lighting purposes with the possibility to change the chrominance.
The potentiality to transmit data is also treated.
Two-Stage Step-up Converter with Different Voltage Transformation Ratios depending on the Duty Cycle
(2022)
A two-stage converter with high output voltage
ratio and reduced current stress of the inductors and partly
reduced voltage stress is discussed. The function is explained
with the help of voltage and current diagrams. The voltage
transformation ratio changes between a quadratic step-up for
duty cycles lower 0.5 and a double Boost converter for duty
cycles higher than 0.5. Dimensioning hints, the control law for
feed-forward controls, the transient when the supply is turned on
is discussed and some simulations are given. A comparison to
other two-stage converters is also treated.
Although various standards and guidelines for accessible design exist, many modern digital devices lack even basic accessibility features. In particular, touchscreens without haptic feedback and a highly complex menu navigation impose serious hurdles for many people – especially for people with disabilities and elderly persons. In this work, we present the Universal Access Panel (UAP) for enabling barrier-free access to home appliances and IoT devices. The system offers a novel, radically simple, multimodal user interface consisting of just a few interaction elements for accessing dedicated functions of the connected home. Using established APIs and communication protocols such as HomeConnect or OpenHab, various domestic appliances, consumer products and smart home devices can be controlled from a single, multimodal interaction console. The system has been designed in cooperation with visually impaired accessibility experts and a user study was conducted with people from the target group. The results show a high overall usability of the prototype.
Equipping rooms used for medical purposes, like e.g., intensive care units,
is an expensive and time-consuming task. In order to avoid extensive subsequent
adjustments due to inappropriate layout visualization or geometric conditions
difficult to identify in 2D plans, it is of utmost importance to provide an optimal
planning environment to future users such as physicians and nurses. In this paper
we present the concept of a fully automatized pipeline, which is designed to
visualize computer aided design (CAD) data using virtual reality (VR). The
immersive VR experience results in improvement of efficiency in the decision-
making process during the planning phase due to better spatial imagination. The
pipeline was successfully tested with CAD data from existing Intensive Care Units.
The results indicate that the pipeline can be a valuable tool in the field of spatial
planning in healthcare, due to simple usage and fast conversion of CAD data. The
next step will be the development of a plugin for CAD tools to allow for interactions
with the CAD models in Virtual Reality, which is not yet possible without manual
intervention
A Model-Based Approach for Remote Development of Embedded Software for Object Avoidance Applications
(2023)
Learning Management Systems (LMS), such as Moodle, enable the rapid progress of digitisation in teaching, which is no longer only taking place in the lecture hall, but increasingly “online” and asynchronously. New didactic concepts (blended learning, “flipped classroom”) consist of alternating self-learning and face-to-face phases, with the former taking place in the LMS, i.e. online. However, no analysis has yet been carried out as to how students act with the material in the self-learning phase, or the teachers are not provided with any information about the learning progress of the students during the self-learning phase. In this paper, concepts of learning and teaching analytics are presented to answer these questions and to integrate the measures derived from them into the teaching processes in a sustainable manner.
In this paper we present various educational activities with Photonics Explorer, an educational kit developed by the photonics research team B - PHOT at VUB (Vrije Universiteit Brussel) for students at secondary schools. The concept is a ‘lab-in-a-box’ that enables students of the 2 nd and 3 rd grade to do photonics experiments themselves at school with lasers, LEDs, lenses, optical fibers, and other high-tech components. Even though, the kit was developed for the secondary schools, we use experiments from the kit also for some other teaching activities such as lectures at the university, photonics workshops for teachers and children at primary/secondary schools or for events such as children's/youth's university or the night of sciences. In the frame of Austrian based project Phorsch! we have organized most of these activities which will be presented here.
Perspectives on Virtual Reality in Higher Education for Robotics and Related Engineering Disciplines
(2022)
Industrial engineering education has a strong focus on and affinity towards technology. While Virtual Reality hardware and applications advance and learning behaviour changes, it is particularly interesting to determine the possible use of Virtual Reality for teaching engineering subjects, for example fundamentals of robotics.
This paper presents a study which examines the possible use of Virtual Reality learning environments at higher learning institutions. The study shows perspectives of students and lecturers and identifies opportunities and challenges for the use of Virtual Reality in industrial engineering education. The results of the indicated study show that the participants have a positive attitude towards Virtual Reality and strong motivation for in class use. The study results also suggest, that Virtual Reality content creation should be included in engineering curricula.

Tele-rehabilitation at home is one of the promising approaches in increasing rehabilitative success and simultaneously decreasing the
financial burden on the healthcare system. Objectives: Novel and mostly mobile devices are already in use, but shall be used in the future to a higher extent for allowing at home rehabilitation processes at a high quality level. The combination of exercises, assessments and available equipment is the basic objective of the
presented database. Methods: The database has been structured in order to allow easy-to-use and fast access for the three main user groups. Therapists – looking for exercise and equipment combinations – patients – rechecking their tasks for home exercises – and manufacturers – entering their equipment for specific use cases.
Results: The database has been evaluated by a proof of concept study and shows a high degree of applicability for the field of rehabilitative medicine. Currently it contains 110 exercises/assessments and 111 equipment/systems. Conclusion: Foundations of presented database are already established in the rehabilitative field of application, but can and will be enhanced in its functionality to be usable for a higher variety of medical fields and specificatios.
Engineering education courses look into processes, equipment and people in order to prepare students to tackle problems in their careers. In manufacturing industry, it is important to use virtual manufacturing tools to analyse processes. This includes both equipment and people. Assembly operations can involve human operators. Modular arrangements of predetermined time standards MODAPTS is a predetermined motion time system method used to analyse assembly processes. Augmented reality (AR) is increasingly being used for industrial processes as well as in education. AR application have been used for maintenance training as a useful way to overly digital instructions to a trainee whilst being able to look at a real object. This is potential beneficial for education. This paper presents the evaluation of a prototype to test a predetermined time standards model using an AR application. An evaluation was carried out comparing AR-based instructions in tablet and PC monitor and paper-written instructions. The results of evaluating the prototype encourage their use as an educational tool in engineering courses.
Entrepreneurs keep the economy and society going by implementing new ideas. Entrepreneurship competencies such as creativity, risk tolerance or perseverance do not only emerge in professional life, but are already developed in early phases of socialization. Entrepreneurship education with its strongly action-oriented teaching and learning formats plays a triggering and process-reinforcing role in this respect. However, the competencies acquired through entrepreneurship education are also increasingly important for successful action in dependent employment. This article first shows that the goals and means of Entrepreneurship Education harmonize with the high practical relevance of teaching required by the Austrian Universities of Applied Sciences Act. Against this background, a concrete example of implementation is used to illustrate how the curricular anchoring of a student project in an engineering course can promote not only the practical relevance of teaching, but also the teaching of entrepreneurial competencies and the transfer of innovation between the university and industry.
The responsibility of a lecturer is not only to share his or her knowledge with the students in an easy to understand manner, but also to help the students to embed new knowledge and to encourage the development of higher-order cognitive skills via applied exercises.
In order to meet the growing demand for blended learning approaches a new course concept was established in autumn 2018. To enhance comprehension and to provide opportunities for self-assessment, web-based training units were implemented by using the interactive learning software “Articulate Storyline”. Students had to prepare at home for the course units by completing interactive chapters. Their learning outcome was assessed by online quizzes at the end of each chapter. Online Training chapters allowed time to focus on selected topics and to repeat key messages in following presence units.
Additionally, guided group exercises were performed to promote analytic skills and abstract thinking. The students had to apply and combine their knowledge to solve problem-based challenges.
An optional revision course was offered to the students, which allowed for interactive repetition of the acquired knowledge with the focus on student-to-lecturer dialog.
An analysis based on a written evaluation of this course resulted in a positive feedback from the students, in particular regarding the guided exercises and the offered revision course. According to the students the group exercises allowed to process the learned subjects, promoted the group climate and were a convenient diversion from the frontal lecture format. Students who attended the revision course on a regular basis showed a better performance at the final exam and exceeded especially at interdisciplinary questions.
The first implementation of this master´s degree course indicated that the combination of web-based training elements with frontal lecture elements, guided exercises stimulating cognitive skills and an optional revision course can teach students the basics of biology in an understandable way. This course structure is especially applicable to teach basic subjects for groups of students with varying initial knowledge.
